Decius Bellicus is nudged by a fellow Senator

"I have misspoken, this is the list as decided by the body already, with the deference given to the former Consul so as to continue him as a Pronconsul as advocated by both Consuls. Will the Co-Consul be vetoing this list of names or otherwise withdrawing his veto?"

I believe that the final tally which includes the hundreds of other senators needs to be completed. Unless you intend to decide the vote on that of 13 senators.

Marcus Decius Bellicus wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 4:57 pm Decius Bellicus rises from his seat, nodding his head in grave thanks to the Censor

"Conscript fathers, honored Censor, the will of the Senate has been heard, and it has been heard clear.

I submit to the body the approval of the following appointments for magistrates of our provinces.

Proconsul of Sicily A. Valerius Marius
Propraetor of Sardinia et Corsica P. Lucius Regulus
Propraetor of Hispania Citerior M. Claudius Marcellus
Propraetor of Hispania Ulterior G. Domitius Corbulo

Decius Bellicus pauses, turning to face towards his Co-Consul

"That is of course, unless the Co-Consul plans to veto the will of the Senate?"
The senate vote as a whole backs this assortment and does not result in a tie.

Decius Bellicus nods as the final votes are tallied

"This measure has passed with broad and clear support of the Senate."

"At this time, I will open the floor to any other business that wishes to be brought forth by Senators seated here today."

Senator A. Valerius Marius stood up to speak

Senators,

Our legions return home victorious from a campaign to avenge treachery and betrayal. Roman lands lay in ruin at the hands of the Boii some twenty years past and now, finally, returned. Bononia and Mutina have been retaken, but now we must send Romans to fill them. We would ask that Roman colonies be established at these sites and opportunity given for veterans to retire to them, to farm and thrive. A small re-settlement of 1500 Romans would cost the treasury some 472,500 denarii - the cost almost entirely paid for by the spoils of war.

Decius Bellicus rises to his feet after the Proconsul has taken his seat

"Conscript fathers,

It cannot be said that Valerius Marius speaks unwisely, as it was by his hand that these lands were taken back in the name of the Republic. It is my opinion, and one that I would open up for discussion amongst this body, that 1500 Romans would not be a fitting amount, let us send 2000 Romans to establish colonia. I would say that 1,000 Romans should be sent to each site, to re-establish Roman rule of law."

To clarify, good Consul, I had hoped to see 1,500 colonists for each colony. If the Senate saw fit to fund it so of course.

The proxy for Allectus stands when called by the Princeps Senatus

Good Senator V. Marius and Honorable Consul D. Bellicus,

Though I support the establishment of Roman colonia in the lands previously occupied by the Boii, I would feel remiss if I did not mention that the Boii threat is not gone. The Boii and Insubres peoples still have a major stronghold and center of operations across from Mutina in Placentia. Before we can send colonists to reestablish our presence in the region, we must ensure that we are not sending them to be easy prey for Boii attacks and raids. I do not believe a formal declaration of war is necessary given the continued campaigns and battles against the Boii and Insubres. The conquest of Placentia will go a long way to ensure the security and well being of our fellow Romans in Gallia Cisalpina.

The proxy for Senator Furius Pavo gestured to speak and then rose.

Conscript Fathers,

The total would be 800,000 for both resettlements, correct? As everyone here knows, Furius Pavo is a firm believer in Roman prosperity and pushes for it in all his deeds. It is only due to the lingering threat of the northern tribes that he hesitates to push for a greater sum to be spent on these Colonia.

He hopes, that with their defeat and scattering, the former lands of the tribals along our northern frontier can be settled with greater density of Romans. For now, he is in favor and finds it acceptable.
