It is heartening to see this esteemed body in such agreement.

I support the nomination of Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo for Hispania Ulterior, he makes a solid case for himself. I would also second his nomination for the noble Gaius Claudius Nero for Hispania Citerior.

Furthermore I would like to nominate Titus Furius Pavo for the governorship of Sardinia. I believe he would be an admirable and capable administrator.

Conscript fathers,

I thank Senator Domitius Corbulo for his succinct statement on how he'd handle being Governor of Hispania Ulterior. I have no further questions and am pleased with his answers. Do we have any other nominations for any of the propraetors?

The next motion we put before this body relates to the governorship of the provinces.

I nominate the following esteemed Senators to the propraetorship, obtaining the necessary imperium to govern the below provinces. I move that the increased hostilities in Hispania do therefore require an additional year to give our governors the time necessary to restore order.

For a one year term:

Governor of Sicily - Hostus Lucretius Tricipitinus
Governor of Sardinia - Titus Furius Pavo

For a two year term:

Governor of Hispania Citerior - Gaius Claudius Nero
Governor of Hispania Ulterior - Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo

I open the floor for debate and then we'll vote.
If there are further nominations, we will determine from drawing lots for the contested provinces.

A point of order, good Consul.

I believe that these would need to each be voted on separately.

We could debate them all together but perhaps cast an individual vote for each promagistrate?

In addition, does it not seem rather odd to leave Fortuna herself to determine which man is selected promagistrate?

Should we not select our nominees based on their qualifications and plans?

I second senator Aurelius Cotta's point of order.

Conscript Fathers,

Given the disorder on the frontiers of the Hispanian provinces, I believe a two year term to be insufficient for meeting the threats at hand. Just as the campaigns against Boii tribes will likely take several years - if previous conflicts are any indication.

This could leave provinces without proper government during times of great peril. The Consul may still yet be in the field! I recommend we consider three or four year terms for the Hispanian governorships.

I support the Consul's proposal for the governorships.

I second Furius Pavo. The situation on our borders in Iberia is unstable and rapid leadership changes will only bring further instability.

Conscript Fathers, a two year term is generous, a four year term is ludicrous! There will be four years of praetors who have served here in Rome that shall be denied opportunities to serve as propraetor!

If the propraetors are unable to finish their duties in the allotted time, the Senate can vote at that time to extend their imperium - as has always been the way of this Curia - or the propraetor can return to seek the office of Consul to continue their campaigns.

The Consul has made a more than reasonable proposal in terms of the lengths of term, let us not engage in excess.

I second the senator Furius Pavo's call to increase the Iberian governor terms from 2 years. The region requires a Propraetor that is able to plan further into the future to ensure the barbarians are dealt with accordingly.

On the topic of nominating Propraetors of the provinces, I support the nomination of Domitius Corbulo for the nomination of Propraetor of Hispania Ulterior. He will be a man just as capable as I in securing the Republic's Iberian provinces from the barbarians, and together we will be able to secure the future of Hispania for Rome.

I also accept the nomination put forth by Domitius Corbulo of Propraetor of Hispania Citerior. Mirroring much of the senator's proposal of Hispania, the region is rife with hostile tribes that see fit to undermine the will of Rome, and ravage our lands unchallenged. The late Praetor Sempronius Tuditanus, along with 8,000 of our Latin allies' troops, have been left unavenged at the hands of the Iberian barbarians. My time served in Iberia during the Second Punic War has taught me much of the methods of these native tribes, and I feel more than capable of ensuring that Hispania Citerior is safe and secure for Rome.

In regards of the economy, Hispania has proven to be rich in metals, both precious and otherwise. I will endeavour to expand the mining operations within the province to ensure that the revenues that can be gained will be utilised on improving the Republic, and ensuring we have a larger army capable of more adequately defending the borders of Rome.

I am in support of Senator Furius Pavo in his suggestion of expanding the term beyond the suggested two years. This does not have to be an everlasting measure, but at least for the immediately future a term of three or four years should become the norm in the far reaches of the Republic where the situation is still quite volatile. I ask that the Consuls give us their thoughts on amending the term of the Hispania Governors to four years.
